Declaration of Independence from Plastic

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for people to dissolve the dependency which has connected them with plastics, and to assume among the sustainable powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of society requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all humans are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. To secure these rights, sustainable practices must be instituted amongst society. Whenever any Form of Dependency becomes destructive to these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new sustainable practices, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its causes in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect the inter generational health and wealth of their environment and of nature around them.

Prudence, indeed, will dictate that dependencies long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly, all experience has shown that humanity is more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the dependencies to which they are accustomed; And yet, when a pattern of abuses and environmental usurpations, pursuing invariably an unsustainable and duplicitous substance evinces a design to reduce them under the insidious appeal as a poison honey, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Dependency, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Such has been the patient sufferance of our Planet; and such is now the necessity which constrains us to alter our former systems of consumption. The history of the present dependency on plastics is a history of repeated environmental injuries under the deceptive guise of convenience , all having the affect of an absolute tyranny over our environment. To prove this, recognize these truths as submitted to a plastic-plagued world desiring reprieve:

*Plastics have polluted our oceans, harmed marine life, and poisoned our food chain.

*Plastics have contributed to the degradation of our natural landscapes and the contamination of our soil.

*Plastics have obstructed the Administration of Justice for environmental crimes, by being difficult to regulate and control.

*Plastics have made humanity over-dependent on a harmful and unsustainable material, for the tenure of their convenience, and the amount and payment of their production.

*Plastics have erected a multitude of packaging and single-use products, and have burdened future generations with swarms of waste poisoning our ecosystems.

*Plastics have proliferated among us an indefinite environmental disaster without the consent of our communities, the animals, the forests, the ocean, nor our children and grandchildren.

*Plastics have combined with economic and industrial interests to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our sustainability goals, and unacknowledged by our need for a clean environment; giving their assent to acts of pretended convenience:

⁃ For creating vast amounts of non-biodegradable waste among us;

⁃ For protecting industries that produce plastics, by mock legislation, from punishment for any environmental damage which they should commit on the Inhabitants of this Planet;

⁃ For economically cutting off our trade with eco-intelligent alternatives;

⁃ For imposing non-recyclable materials and microplastic particles on us without our consent;

⁃ For depriving us, in many cases, of the benefits of a healthy environment both inside and outside our bodies;

⁃ For temporarily dismantling the natural law of circularity, establishing therein an arbitrary dependence on plastics, and enlarging their use so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument creating absolute reliance into our communities;

⁃ For subterfuge and practicality in defying our most valuable environmental laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our consumption;

*Plastics have abdicated a sense of environmental responsibility, and have initiated a war against nature.

*Plastics have polluted our waters, ravaged our lands, choked our wildlife, and decimated the health of our ecosystems.

*Plastics have constrained our fellow citizens taken captive by convenience to bear the burden of waste, to become the executioners of their environment.

*Plastics have inflamed environmental crises among us, and are destined to bring upon all inhabitants of this Earth, the merciless consequences of pollution.

We petition for redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A material whose character is thus marked by every act which may define an environmental tyrant is unfit to be the cornerstone of a sustainable society.

We have warned both our own humanity as the source of demand, and the global industrial complex of suppliers from time to time of the dangers of production to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over our health and environment. We have spoken to polluters of the circumstances of our shared dependence on a healthy planet. They too have been deaf to the voices of environmental intelligence and ignorant to the vital importance of sustainability.

We, therefore, having been found now aware, the representatives and intended guardians of the natural world, appealing to our Mother Earth and to the powers that infused her with life, of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by authority of the future of humanity, solemnly publish and declare,

That this Earth is, and of right ought to be Free and Independent of Plastics; that it is absolved from all allegiance to plastic dependency, and that all consumption habits between us and plastics, are and ought to be weaned off of and eventually, totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent inhabitants, we have full power to institute sustainable practices, establish eco-friendly alternatives, contract alliances with nature, and to do all other acts and things which People caring of future generations may of right do to protect the health of our ecosystems; And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our futures, and our sacred honor.
